This here is a slideshow that shows different aspects of the scallops digestive system.
The sea scallop's digestive system is very interesting. The most amazing thing about this digestive system is the complexity of it and how it can fit in such a small animal. in order to even gather food in the first lace, scallops need to suck in water and filter it for food particles in the water. they do this by beating their cilia. this forces water to ventilate inside of the scallop and it helps it get food. water enters through the mantle of the animal and the process begins from here. mucus catches food particles that have been sucked in. from here these particles travel through to the esophagus to the stomach. the odd thing about this system is that the food actually passes through the heart of the scallop. after the food is in the stomach, a process called extracellular digestion takes place. enzymes are secreted through the cell membrane and the food particles are digested this way. a picture of extracellular digestion can be found in the slideshow above. then, the undigested food is then transported to the rectum and it is excreted out of the anus.
